The Women of King John
This film takes you into a sort of metaphysical backstage; there's a few keyhole-views of other characters in King John who are not depicted in the films on view here, but who are essential to the play. |

Patrick Stewart pointed out that while John seems to be the only King with no soliloquies, he does have one.
It's just one line long, after he learns Queen Eleanor died. He says:
"My mother, dead."
Inward reach = limited, but it's there.

At left, the first Shakespeare film. Ot depicts the death of King John. This was not such an odd choice for the late 19th century. The scene was admired for its depiction of a man not aware enough even to regret his mistakes clearly. This is a terrifying state of affairs, since it means an inability to repent, and that, in turn, meant damnation to some. King John, like Milton's Satan, and Shakespeare's own corrupt Cardinal from Henry VIII, feels he has a hell within himself.
